The prime holding device when turning bowls and platters.
100mm(4in) and 150mm(6in) standard steel faceplates are the basic accessories for any woodturner undertaking faceplate work. Ours are manufactured from high quality EN8 mild steel and incorporate two rows of staggered, 90º countersunk screw holes giving 12 holes in all. Adequate for the most demanding holding situations.

Small screw chucks are most commonly used
to provide a very quick and unfussy way of mounting work pieces
such as eggcup blanks. A dedicated screw chuck has advantages over screw insert offered as an accessory for some large expanding/contracting jaw type chucks. The body is much more compact and unobtrusive, and the overhang from the main bearing of the lathe is significantly reduced. The stainless steel centre screw used for all the HDB screwchucks has truly exceptional holding power as it has a 12" overall diameter and a sharp, coarse pitch helical thread form. An added and useful feature is that the centre screw can be removed and replaced with a 1" diameter pin with eccentric locking bar when required.
All chuck bodies in the range have a raised rim to encourage positive seating of the work.
They are made from 'EN8' high tensile steel which is not only very tough but has a good resistance to corrosion and work-staining. |

The 40 and 55mm diameter screw chucks have just the single screw (interchangeable with the optional 1"
diameter pinchbeck). |

he 70 mm diameter version is primarily a face plate with the option of being able to fit the centre screw or pin chuck inserts.
In fact the six screw holes in this chuck are set at an angle of 20° so that they dovetail into the work and provide incredible holding power, even in end grain. This |

|
makes the 70 mm chuck perfect for mounting comparatively long and large diameter blanks which will have a small
finished foot area, as well as conventional bowls. |

As a general guide
when considering which faceplate or screwchuck will be most useful, |
|
|
|
|
very large diameters tend to obstruct free movement of the tool and seldom offer any real advantage. Many turners customarily
make the first mounting of even heavy bowl blanks using just a 70 mm screwchuck to hold and turn the work whilst the foot and outside of the bowl are shaped. |
